Stadio San Paolo, Naples, Italy – Despite being the inferior team in both the match and the table, Juventus managed to defeat table-leader Napoli by sneaking a goal past them in the most important match of the season.

In soccer, points are awarded based on the outcome of each game. Three points are awarded for each win, one point is earned for a tie, and no points are given for a loss. Before the match, Juventus, also known as La Vecchia Signora (The Old Lady) by their Italian fans, was trailing four points behind table-leader Napoli. A loss for Juventus would have meant a wide gap of seven points. Napoli would have needed to lose three games for Juventus to catch up.

Despite winning, Juventus had had only 7 shots, with 4 on-target, and only 32% possession. On the other hand, Napoli had dominated the match with 68% possession, and an overwhelming 21 shots, with 6-on target. Juventus had scored in the twelfth minute through Gonzalo Higuain, the striker that had previously played for the Napoli squad.

“Sometimes luck isn’t on your side,” said Bryan Diaz, a Haynes 10th grader, who is always up-to-date with soccer scores. “Napoli had more chances but didn’t score, while Juventus had a few chances, but had the luck to have it go in.”

He added, “I think Juventus was just luckier in this occasion.”

Juventus was indeed very lucky. Being already four points behind, a loss could have been the fatal blow. It would have meant that Juventus would have had little to no chance of winning the league anymore.

“Juventus were really lucky, in my opinion. Napoli should have won that game easily, but Buffon made some amazing saves,” said Brayan Ramos, a 10th grader on the varsity soccer team.

Gianluigi Buffon is the goalkeeper and captain for Juventus, and helped his team win by making many saves to keep his side alive.

“Our mentality and approach were spot on and we stayed tight. When we play like that it’s tough for anyone to beat us,” said the Juventus captain, after achieving the win.

“It would have been a shame if we’d been without him for such an important game. Not only did he play, he went and grabbed the winner too.”

“Playing against his former side doesn’t affect him; he showed that last year in the cup when he scored two here,” he said, when asked what he thought on his teammate’s performance during the match.

The team had won, but the captain was still apprehensive about the rest of scores in the league.

“If we play like that, we send out the message that Juve are in the mix and we’re here to stay. Let’s not get carried away just yet though: if Inter win on Sunday, we’ll still be third, and I’m not going to celebrate third place.”

As the table currently stands, Inter Milan is first place with 40 points, Napoli is second with 39, and Juventus is third with 38 points, all after 16 games.

With a slim point difference and 22 games yet to go, the trophy could go either way. We’ll just have to wait and see.
