On September 24, FIFA held the 9th annual FIFA Puskas Award ceremony for all the best and stunning goals of the year. A lot of  professional soccer players appeared to view the event in London. Spectators who attended the ceremony viewed the best player of the year, goal of the year, coach of the year, goalie of the year, best female player of the year, best women coach of the year, FIFA fan award, FIFA fair play award, and the FIFApro XI.

This year Luka Modric won the FIFA best player of the year award which is the hardest award to get out the whole ceremony because it’s worth more then other awards. The only two players that ever got that award before Modric was Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo they were always nominated and one of them always got chosen. But this year Leo messi wasn’t nominated for the 1st time in years.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Modric former teamate went through some controversy reguarding if he deserved the award or not. The allegations were debunked by Ronaldo himself.

People were shocked when Modric won because it was his 1st time ever winning that award. He was also the 1st to break the run in between Ronaldo and Messi winning this award.

“ He was the mastermind behind real Madrid 4th champions league in 5 years and led Croatia to the finals in the Russia World cup  2018 where he showed his best for everyone,” said Diego Flores a Junior at Haynes. “Also, I think Messi wasn’t involved because he lost the Champions League and didn’t make it far in the World Cup that’s what i think about Modric winning the award and Messi not making for the 1st time in forever,” he added.

Salah won this years puskas award which is an award for the soccer player who scored the best and unique goal of the year. Some people disagree and think other goals were better than his.

“I feel like Salah shouldn’t have won the puskas award because there was better goals scored by other players,” Said Bryan Diaz Junior at El Haynes. “For example the volley that Pavard scored in the World Cup against Argentina to put them level,” He said.

These year many players got nominated for many awards this year but the most controversial winner was Salah who was the winner of the best goal of the year aka The Puskas and many people disagreed with the pick that was made by FIFA.

“I feel like Salah shouldn’t have won the Puskas award” said Eli Gomez a Senior at EL Haynes. “Don’t get me wrong he’s one of the best players in the world at the moment but for me there were more than 1 player that deserved it and for me Bale’s goal in the Champions League final was the winner for the Puskas Award” He also said.

“Cristiano Ronaldo who scored an overhead kick in the Champions League against current club Juventus, and Gareth Bale, who hit one of his own in the Champions League final against Liverpool, are among those to miss out on the award people felt as their goals were more valuable and more unique. For me everyone has their opinion and the opinion that I just gave you people might agree with it or disagree with it.

The FIFApro XI was formed on December 15, 1965. Since then  Professional soccer players have had to work hard everyday and prove themselves on the field that they deserve a spot in FIFApro XI. This years FIFApro XI picks were Kylian Mbappe, Dani Alves, Raphael Varane, Lionel Messi, N’Golo Kante, Eden Hazard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, David de gea, and Marcelo Vieira. These players left everything on the pitch sweat, tears, anger and joy. Since 2007 both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have made an appearance of 12 each which is something no other players have done.

“ I feel like the FIFA awards are rigged and unfair especially this year with Salah winning the Puskas and Messi not being included in FIFA’s Best player of the year award,” said Anthony Aviles a junior at E.L. Haynes. “If this award is based on trophies then it’s pointless as Lionel Messi won Copa De Rey and La Liga two very important titles that mean a lot to the soccer world and fans.” He also said. Messi had better stats then Cristiano Ronaldo having 54 goals and 11 assists, Luka Modric which didn’t have nothing unless we talk about the world cup, Mohamed Salah having 50 goals and 14 assists, and Messi having 52 goals and 21 assists and also winning for the fifth time in his career and 1st time in history his fifth Golden Boot for the Most goals in a season during the 2017/2018 season.

If this doesnt show how this year FIFA awards for FIFA’s Best and Puskas awards were rigged or just unfair to the players that deserved it this year then we don’t know what will.
