Students reflect on death of Stephen Hillenburg, Spongebob creator

Do you remember those childhood moments waking up in the morning, turning the TV on, and putting on Spongebob Squarepants? Many of us came after school, sat in front of the TV, and watched Spongebob and Patrick annoy Squidward.Spongebob Squarepants is a show that brings joy and laughter, but this news isn’t joyful.

Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Spongebob, passed away on November 26 at his home at age 57. His death was caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which he was diagnosed with on March of last year. ALS is a disease that causes your muscles to weaken and it impacts physical function.

Mr. Hillenburg  graduated from Humboldt State University in California with a bachelor’s degree in natural resource planning and interpretation. Hillenburg then taught marine biology at the Orange County Marine Institute. He had always love the sea and drawing. In 1992, he received his master of arts degree.

Hillenburg began working with Nickelodeon in 1993. His first job with Nickelodeon was to write and direct certain episodes from the series Rocko’s Modern Life.

“I remember it watching it but it’s not a show I loved,” said Daniel Amarando, a sophomore from E.L. Haynes.

Spongebob Squarepants inspired two movies first one in 2004, and the second live-action movie in 2016 and a Broadway musical, which closed in September.

” I watched the the second movie but not the first one” said Cecilia Sosa, a freshman from E.L. Haynes. ” The movie was interesting.”

After Mr. Hillenburg’s death, many students reflected on their favorite episodes and what Spongebob Squarepants  has  from the past 19 years.

“I don’t have a favorite episode from Spongebob Squarepants but, I feel like Spongebob has taught me about friendship and the importance of it.”  said Ariel Phipps a junior from E.L. Haynes.  

Spongebob Squarepants is on the 12th seasons, the 12th season was aired on November 2018 before Stephen Hillenburg’s death. The season is still ongoing and there will be a total of 26 episodes produced.
