When one hears the word sports, what might they think of? If they are fond of sports, it could be basketball, football, or soccer. Others may consider cheer, tennis, or golf. For some, it might even be chess. All of these are recognized as sports. Currently, there are new sports that are emerging and gaining popularity quickly. The biggest of them are sports that are not traditionally considered sports. The new age of sports has introduced what we now refer to as: eSports.  First of all what is eSports? eSports also known as electronic sports, is multiplayer video games played by professional players in an organized environment in which they compete for money.

The criteria for an activity to be considered a sport is physical stamina, quick reflexes, dexterity, structure, standardized rules, competition between different teams, score-keeping to determine a winner and provide entertainment.  Of course, like many other sports there will be people who do not want to watch eSports or may not consider it a sport, and that is completely fine. People can also argue that eSports don’t really have any physical exertion like other sports such as football, and for the most part it doesn’t. It doesn’t have the rigorous part of the sport and you’re not really risking your life as much. But, eSports still meets the “criteria” to be a sport, and no where in the books does it say you have to risk your life in order for it to be a sport. All of the previous criteria designates that eSports are in fact sports! Also there are more than thirty U.S. colleges and universities that offer scholarships for gamers. University of Utah is one of the larger sports schools to offer scholarships for video gaming.

According to the Oxford Dictionary the definition of Sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against another or others for entertainment.” If you were to go by this definition and the requirements of a sport, eSports would be considered a sport.

In conclusion, eSports should be considered a sport because not only do they meet the criteria and definition but the growth rates for esports is so high, that it is likely that professional gaming will eventually overtake some or all of the major professional sports leagues. The future of sports is coming and it will consist of eSports being the main attraction, so if you don’t support it now you might be too late to consider it later.
